Chris Clarke (
http://www.chris-clarke.com), a freelance writer and
former colleague at
Bed & Breakfast Inns ONLINE, sent me the
following write-up regarding a burglary attempt last month at The
Loveless Cafe.
If there's a Nashville meat-and-three better known in the wider world than
The Loveless Motel and Cafe [
http://www.meatandthree.com/tn/lovelesscafe/index.html], I don't know of it.
According to the Cafe's web site [
http://www.lovelesscafe.com],
Joe and Annie Loveless first started serving fried chicken and biscuits
at the former Harpeth Valley Tea Room on Highway 100 in 1951. In the 55
years since, the Loveless Motel and Cafe has changed owners a few
times, and the motel is no longer open. A mail order operation was
begun in the early 80's, and today the Loveless Hams & Jams
catalog and web site offer everything from preserves, hams and candies
to baked goods and an extensive line of aprons, T-shirts and hats. The
Cafe is thriving, and the food and the atmosphere are pleasing throngs
of diners, as well as travel and food writers.
In early October 2006, the Loveless Cafe made Nashville's local news
after a thwarted burglary - the thieves couldn't get the safe open, but
they ransacked the office, doing some $1500 in damage. The break-in
artists haven't been identified or caught yet, but by now they probably
know this: security cameras at the Loveless caught the whole thing on
video -- here's the link to Nashville Channel 4's coverage at WSMV.com,
with a film clip showing the unsuccessful burglars at work:

Visit the Loveless soon -- during business hours -- and they'll treat you right and feed you well.
Thanks, Chris, for the information!
On a personal note, my wife, daughter and I have made the trip over to
The Loveless several times in the last few months. On the west side of
Nashville, at the Northern Terminus of the
Natchez Trace Parkway, this is a great place to catch a breakfast before a leisurely drive on the Trace or a lunch or dinner on the return trip.
