Had some business to take care of in Murfreesboro, Tennessee today and had a great opportunity to get together with my oldest daughter, a freshman at Middle Tennessee State University. We decided to take our lunch at the City Café, a Meat and Three, located just off the square, that has been around for years.

The City Café has the look and feel of one of those stand-by restaurants that have out-lived many residents of many a town throughout the South. There are a lot of pictures on the walls. The décor brings back memories of my own personal history traveling with my family and my dad, a hearty eater and lover of diners and café’s.

Since my daughter and I were limited in our time and had arrived near the noon lunch hour, we felt fortunate to find a table quickly, even though the restaurant was pretty busy. I tried the popular fried chicken, pinto beans and mashed potatoes, and a couple pieces of cornbread (corn pone, I think). Kathryn enjoyed a three-vegetable plate of creamed corn, mashed potatoes and fried okra along with a nice glass of sweet tea.

I would like to have had more time to relax and engage in some conversation about the history of the City Café, but just did not have time - and the owners/staff were pretty busy. I am sure I will back and will try again. If you have any words about the City Café’s former days, either comment on this post or shoot me an email to phil@meatandthree.com and I will add it to their record.

Have a most Happy Thanksgiving!
